A 'domestic incident' had taken place prior to the attack, according to a report by local TV station WCBI.
Kitchens was arrested and charged with manslaughter. He was released after posting a $25,000 bond, the Magnolia State Live reported.
It is understood he worked as a police officer for the city of Tupelo in Lee County, for just over a year until May 2020.
Social media posts indicate that Kitchens was the father of Phillips' youngest child.

Phillips worked as a glamour model and the owner of two businesses; the online boutique Couturhea and a shop called Beauty Perfected.
Phillips' GoFundMe page remembers her as a 'beautiful soul inside and out.'
'She left behind her two children, Carley age 7 and Kaleb who was only 10 months old. She knew how to bring a smile to everyone's face.
'She was robbed of life too soon and her family would appreciate your support during this traumatic time,' the post reads.

'Even if you haven’t met Brittany, or you know her from her modeling career you can see how loving and kind of a person she was...'
'Brittany was an amazing mother, her children were her world.'
The page has so far raised $6,885 to help with funeral costs.

Phillips' close friend Angel Boatright mourned her death. She told WCBI: 'Brittany was the kind of person that once you had just one conversation with her and you realized she just wasn't all looks. And superficial.
'She had so many of her own opinions. She would do anything to improve anybody's situation or anything they were going through.'
Boatright described her friend's ex partner as 'abusive'.
'That was the mother of his child that he ran over,' she said.
'He'd been abusive. There are so many people that know what she's been going through for a long time and we just want justice for her and her babies because he took their mother from them.'
A photographer for Belmont Images Magazine claimed on the site's Facebook page that Phillips had been 'taken from us in a domestic violence incident'.
'She leaves behind a lot of fond memories of countless photoshoots over the years along with two young children,' he wrote.
'I met her back in 2011 when she was as skinny little 16 year old from Starkville.
'We could tell then just how good of a model she was going to be. She ultimately traveled the world doing what she loved to do.
'She will be missed.'
